It's Official

We finally started putting up some walls in our basement! Well...we don't have any walls yet, just the plates on the bottom that the walls are going to sit on. We started on the exercise room, since that is the room we use the most currently. And besides the main area of the basement, it is the biggest room...almost 20' x 20'. I tell you though, I'm really glad Ryan got a power miter saw for Christmas, because that probably cut our time down by more than half! It took us all day, but we got the bottom plates down around the entire room...we estimated our amount of treated lumber pretty spot on...we only had one 2x4 left.
The girls were very good while Ryan and I were working all day. They stayed upstairs with the exception of one time when Kaylee wanted to come down and see what we had accomplished...but she had been invited down. The girls didn't argue or fight even once! And they were on their own all day. They're pretty special!
The dogs jumped every time Ryan put a tapcon into the floor. It basically sounded like he was shooting a shotgun in the basement. They didn't start shaking or anything, but Murphy followed me around everywhere and kept trying to sit on my lap. Abby was fine though. I didn't help with that part because I couldn't get my ear plugs to stay in. I have never been able to wear the expandable foam ear plugs though. I'll have to find some kind of ear cover for the next room we work on. That's alright though...that part was pretty much a one person job.
But I think we had fun today! I did anyway!

Exerpts

I just finished up the chapter on Christian Marriage in C.S. Lewis's book Mere Christianity. If you don't know, this book was based on a radio broadcast he gave in the early to mid 1940s. It's amazing to me that things really never seem to change. But these exerpts I'm posting are ones that had an impact on me today:

"The Christian idea of marriage is based on Christ's words that a man and wife are to be regarded as a single organism--for that is what the words "one flesh" would be in modern English. And the Christians believe that when He said this He was not expressing a sentiment but stating a fact--just as one is stating a fact when one says that a lock and its key are one mechanism, or that a violin and a bow are one musical instrument. The inventor of the human machine was telling us that its two halves, the male and the female, were made to be combined together in pairs, not simply on the sexual level, but totally combined."
In speaking on the Churches view on divorce, "...they all regard divorce as something like cutting up a living body, as a kind of surgical operation...What they all disagree with is the modern view that it is a simple readjustment of partners, to be made whenever people feel they are no longer in love with one another, or when either of them falls in love with someone else."
"Now everyone who has been married in a church has made a public, solemn promise to stick to his (or her) partner till death....To this someone may reply that he regarded the promise made in church as a mere formality and never intended to keep it. Whom, then, was he trying to deceive when he made it? God? That was really very unwise. Himself? That was not very much wiser....If they have now come to their senses and want to be honest, their promise, already made, constrains them. If people do not believe in permanent marriage, it is perhaps better that they should live together unmarried than that they should make vows they do not intend to keep."
"The idea that 'being in love' is the only reason for remaining married really leaves no room for marriage as a contract or promise at all....The Christian law is not forcing upon the passion of love something which is foreign to that passion's own nature: it is demanding that lovers should take seriously something which their passion of itself impels them to do."
(In other words...love makes you want to bind yourself to that person)
"But what, it may be asked, is the use of keeping two people together if they are no longer in love? There are several sound social reasons; to provide a home fro their children, to protect the woman (who has probably sacrificed or damaged her own career by getting married) from being dropped whenever the man is tired of her....But, of course, ceasing to be 'in love' need not mean ceasing to love. Love in this second sense-love as distinct from 'being in love' is not merely a feeling. It is a deep unity, maintained by the will and deliberately strengthened by habit; reinforced by the grace which both parents ask, and receive, from God. They can have this love for each other even at those moments when they do not like each other....'Being in love' first moved them to keep the promise. It is on this love that the engine of marriage is run: being in love was the explosion that started it."
"People get from books the idea that if you have married the right person you may expect to go on 'being in love' forever. As a result, when they find they are not, they think this proves they have made a mistake and are entitled to a change-not realizing that, when they have changed, the glamour will presently go out of the new love just as it went out of the old one."
This next section is again talking about divorce, but I think it applies to a current hot debate topic:
"Before leaving the question of divorce, I should like to distinguish two things which are often confused. The Christian conception of marriage is one; the other is the quite different question--how far Christians, if they are voters or Members of Parliament, ought to try to force their views of marriage on the rest of the community by embodying them in divorce laws. A great many people seem to think that if you are a Christian yourself you should try to make divorce difficult for everyone. I do not think that. At least I know I should be very angry if the Mohammedans tried to prevent the rest of us from drinking wine. My own view is that the Churches should frankly recognize that the majority of the British people are not Christians and, therefore, cannot be expected to live Christian lives. There ought to be two distinct kinds of marriage: one governed by the State with the rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the Church with rules enforced by her on her own members. The distinction ought to be quite sharp, so that a man knows which couples are married in a Christian sense and which are not."

Anyway, that's what I read today. I'm only halfway through the entire book and this chapter was only eight pages! It is a treasure trove of knowledge and insight!

I've got the itch!

Or maybe it would be better titled "Nesting without the protuding tummy". But anyway, I've been itching to make some home improvements. I have a lot of nail pops to fix...apparently 2008 was the year for some major house settling. I had the ladder out and all my tools set to go, but when I pulled off some bulging plaster I saw that the nail pops in the ceiling were actually nails and not screws. So I wanted to wait to get a "professional" opinion from Mom as to whether I should just reset the nails, or try to replace them with screws. I really think it's strange that they used nails in the ceiling to hang the drywall, but they used screws on the walls, hmmm.
And paint....boy oh boy....does our downstairs need some paint! We still have the lovely contractors paint in the majority rooms downstairs. The only rooms we've painted have been the family room and powder room. And they both look really nice! Our kitchen in in dire need of some paint! And the foyer is in pretty bad shape too, but being two story, that's not something I'm going to be doing. I think I would hurt myself if I tried...I get dizzy just standing on a 6ft ladder doing regular rooms. That's bad. There are some really fancy schmancy things I want to do to the downstairs, but since we are working on the basement, those things have taken a back seat for a while. So, I told Ryan that I just wanted to paint for now so the rooms don't look so nasty. He's going to get me a paint budget, yay!

Poor K-K had a really bad earache on Saturday night. She kept me up from 4am to 7:30. Then we just decided to get up and start our day. She fell asleep off and on in the wee hours, but I didn't sleep because I was busy massaging behind her ear. It was the only thing that made it feel better. I think her nasty cold just clogged her ear up and there was no infection because she is fine today and was fine most of the day yesterday once the pain stopped. I had to get some food in her tummy so I could give her some ibuprofen since the tylenol didn't do anything for her. Then I have an eye mask that can be heated in the microwave and we strapped that thing on her head and put some nice warm heat on her ear....and then she was all better! She didn't have any trouble sleeping last night, woo hoo! That means I didn't either...but I still had a terrible time dragging myself out of bed this morning, bleh!

Just odd....

Well, Alexis had her eyes tested yesterday at school and she was perfectly ok. So, she must just be like everyone I know suffering from sinus issues which causes nasty headaches. I know I'm getting a little tired of it...it's been a really bad winter for that.

Kaylee is super drippy this morning. I think that girl blew her nose about 20 times and it was still running like a faucet. At least I can get her to blow her nose...Alexis won't. Thankfully, everything Kaylee has been blowing out has been crystal clear so there is no infection. I think perhaps if she's still dripping like crazy tomorrow, we will forgo the family game night at church to keep all the other kids healthy.

So, there are some really weird things that happen when I'm talking on the phone.
First of all, it can be dead silent in the mere moments before I either get a phone call or make a phone call. But, once the receiver touches my ear, the house becomes the noisiest place on earth. The girls decide to ask me questions or to begin playing really loudly. And the dogs...oh the dogs...they will be sound asleep, but when I get on the phone, Murphy starts prancing around like she has ants in her pants (I know, what pants....dogs don't wear pants!) and Abby starts her heavy Viszla breathing and does the Viszla dance, next thing I know she's trying to get in my face! So I don't know if all these things are the cause of the weird thing that I do, or if it's just a weird thing that I do...but for some reason, I CANNOT sit still when I'm on the phone. I tried yesterday, but I ended up getting up and folding clothes while I was talking to Val. Sometimes I catch myself just doing laps around the downstairs...through the kitchen, into the dining room, into the living room, through the foyer, back into the kitchen and around again. It's just strange I tell ya. I do that when I brush my teeth too. I can't just stand in the bathroom and brush my teeth...sometimes I find myself walking up and down the hallway upstairs. Quirks....silly, silly quirks. But there are other times when I am perfectly content just sitting...doing absolutely nothing but thinking. Those moments are very rare though!

Happy Lost Day (formerly known as hump day)

As I suspected would happen, Kaylee caught a nasty cold at the Dr.'s office. I just knew one of the girls would end up sick. But K is coping amazingly well. She's such a happy little girl! She sounds really nasty...she's got a really junky cough and a super drippy nose. Her legs really swelled up from the tetanus shot, but that should get better in a few days. At least I got Kaylee some good medicine yesterday so she can at least sleep comfortably at night.

I got a call from the school nurse yesterday. Apparently Alexis had a headache and she was calling to make sure it was ok to give her some tylenol. Alexis has been having headaches more frequently in the last month or so. I'm suspecting she may need glasses because the times she complains at home are when she has been reading in bed or staring at her homework. At her eye appointment last spring, the doc said she was a bit farsighted and that she would most likely not need glasses unless she started to complain of headaches. So, I sent a note to Alexis's wonderful teacher and she sent me an email letting me know that the school nurse is going to check Alexis's vision today. So, we'll see what news that brings!

Early Monday Morning

The girls had their annual check-ups this morning. I was unable to get them in at the same time today, so we made two separate trips to the Dr.'s office. But it's only 5 minutes from our house, so it worked out just fine. Alexis was first @ 8:15 this morning. It was really early, but I think I liked that time of day because the office wasn't running behind on appointments yet, so our wait was very short. The girls both got flu shots...they were out of the flu mist (a nasal form of the vaccine). Alexis did great! It was over before she knew it. Kaylee was not so lucky though. At the beginning of her appointment she was actually excited to be getting her flu shot, but her Dr. and I decided to go ahead and do all of her Kindergarten shots too, so the poor baby ended up getting 4 shots total. One of them was the Tetanus which really stings! She cried a lot...and that made Alexis and I cry too. She still wasn't happy about it when we got home, but she's doing a lot better now. I'm making sure she runs around a lot so her legs don't get as sore. But all in all it was a good visit. The girls 'numbers' were pretty similar. They were both around the 55th percentile in weight with Alexis weighing in at 55 pounds and Kaylee at 36 (not big enough for the little booster yet). Alexis was in the 45 percentile for height at 49 inches and Kaylee was in the 37th at almost 40 inches (39 3/4). I did talk to the Dr. about Kaylee's feet and she said just to do the same thing I was doing...that it wasn't eczema...just dry winter skin. She also suggested that I used some hydrocortisone, which I had thought about, but I wanted to make sure it was alright to use it on her feet. So, she said I was doing the right thing, but maybe just do it three times a day and add in a cortisone treatment.

Yesterday, we went and ordered the 2x4's so we can start framing in the basement. To say Ryan is excited would be a gross understatement! But our "pile of wood" should be delivered tomorrow afternoon. We're hoping to get the framing all done so that when spring break comes we're ready to start wiring. But, we're in no time crunch, so we'll just see how it works out.

Valentine's Day=Love

We have just finished up our traditional candle-lit Valentine's dinner. I made Honey-mustard Pork scallopine and Ryan made some mixed veggies. This is our second year following this tradition. Last year we just used some hurricane candles to light our dinner. This year I wanted to do something with MUCH more meaning...so I dug out the unity candle from our wedding and the girls' baptism candles. So during prayer time we asked the girls what Valentine's Day was a celebration of. After some very interesting answers we eventually got the answer we were looking for...Valentine's Day is all about L-O-V-E. Ryan and I went on to explain the meaning and uses of the unity candle in a wedding ceremony. The girls thought it was pretty neat! Then we began the discussion of their baptisms and what their candles represented. We talked about the greatest love of all! The love that God has for all of us that He gave His only Son for us. The girls were very involved in the discussion. It was a very wonderful family moment...one of those that you just burn into your memory so you can keep it close to your heart forever!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son. That whosoever believes in him, will not perish, but have everlasting life! John 3:16

Wind damage

That was some wind yesterday. We were very fortunate to avoid what could easily have been major damage to our house. This is a picture of the steeple that used to be on top of the pool house right across the street:

There are a few pieces of neighbor homes in our back yard...just little accent pieces. Thankfully there was no visible damage to our house, not even any missing shingles from what I can tell. But anyway, the pool house steeple used to sit on top of the roof right in the middle. Not anymore!

Alexis is really flying through her math facts now. She's passed a test every day this week and she's finally on her very last addition test today. Next she'll move on to multiplication, which I foresee going much quicker for her since they have been learning songs to help them memorize the facts.

I've been hooked on watching "The Legend of the Seeker" on the internet this week. I just can't stop myself. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I run out of episodes to watch and I actually have to wait on the next one!

Kaylee's got her Valentine's day party at school this morning. It's always a lot of fun to see her little eyes light up when she opens every valentine! She wrote her own name on 16 valentines for her class and put them in the envelopes all by herself. She's such a big girl! Well, speaking of Kaylee, I probably should head back to church to get her!

Awww Murphy!

I just had to share this picture. The girls are both really concentrating, but Murphy just looks so sweet snuggling with Alexis...awww!

I believe we've made a decision regarding Kindergarten. After thinking about it over the weekend, we've decided to wait another year. The amazing teachers at Kaylee's school assured us that if we decided to enroll her again next year, that they would really challenge her for us. Personally, since I am a very involved parent, I know that if she is not being challenged enough in elementary school that I will be able to give her enough extra challenges at home. Honestly, kids want to grow up way too fast anyway without the added pressure of beginning school at such a young age. I want to give Kaylee every opportunity to just be a kid.

I am just extremely grateful that we are so blessed! The fact that our biggest worry about Kaylee was whether or not to enroll her in Kindergarten early...we are truly blessed! I think about families with children with severe health problems and often wonder...why me? Why do I have it so good? What did I do to deserve this? But then I realize, it has absolutely nothing to do with me and EVERYTHING to do with God. Nothing I have was gained by something that I did...but by what He did! It just makes me want to give all that much more...to share the wonderful blessings I have received with others.

What to do...what to do...

Ryan and I had a conference with Kaylee's wonderful teachers this morning. Of course, the main topic of conversation was "What do we do with Kaylee next year?" Ryan brought up kindergarten, which honestly surprised me a little bit. In my mind, I had already decided that kindergarten next year was out of the question. We received lots of great advice on the subject and in a nutshell we were told that Kaylee would do wonderfully whatever we decided. She is definitely intellectually ready for kindergarten...but is she ready socially/emotionally? And what effects will being the youngest kid in the class have on her in the long run (especially around the early teen years/puberty/driving/etc)? I really, truly want to be entirely selfish and keep her home with me for another year, but I also want to do what is best for her.
We do have a little bit of experience having one of the younger children in a grade. Alexis having a birthday in July makes her one of the youngest kids in her class. But her maturity surpasses a lot of her older classmates. And even being in the higher abilities class she is acing all of her subjects. Her only struggle in school is math and mostly just her math fact time tests. But this really comes as no surprise to me since I have known for the LONGEST time that she is a slow thinker. Not that she's slow in any way, she just has supremely deep thoughts and her gears are turning all the time; which I'm sure is very distracting when you are supposed to be completing math problems quickly.
So back to Kaylee...will she be fine if we start her in kindergarten next year? Definitely. Will she be just as fine if we waited another year? Again...definitely. So, what to do....feel free to weigh in...

I'm done I think

Kaylee was well enough to get to go to school today, yay! Of course she had a wonderful time, but I sure am getting tired of the slippery driving weather...darn it Phil! Instead of driving all the way home, I ran some errands. It's really quite nice to be able to grocery shop by myself...it makes the trip a lot faster. And the ONLY good thing about the cold is that I didn't have to rush home to get the cold stuff in the refrigerator; I could just leave it in the back of the car while I did some shoe shopping. I had to get some new running shoes because the last few times I've run in my old ones I've gotten some nasty shin splints. Let me tell ya', having a 36 pound girl use your legs for a slide when you have shin splints does not feel very good at all! So, that was a pretty good sign that my shoes were worn out. I found some nice Nike's at Dick's. It only took me 10 minutes to find the shoes, try them on and check out...now that's efficient shoe shopping!

So, since the last tag game, I was looking at some old pictures and I just thought I'd end this post with a couple of cuties:

Photo tag

In this game, you are supposed to find the 6th picture in your archives.

This is one of my favorites! This is little Kaylee just over 1 year old, I think. She loved "helping" Daddy play the piano. To this day, she still goes into the piano room and pounds away on the keys. She's actually gotten much better and can play a few tunes now. Isn't she just stinking cute!

Photobucket

I'm supposed to tag several people, but I think I'll skip that. If you wanna...go ahead!

In other family news...Ryan and I finally did some actual basement finishing work this weekend. We installed our back up for the sump pump. Here are a couple of pictures of our handiwork:

This is where we had to cut into the main water supply. We only got a little wet from the water that was left in the pipes. This was probably the hardest part to do.

This is the pit. The new back up is on the right and the primary pump is on the left.

Kaylee's been running a fever the last couple of days. Sunday evening she was complaining of a headache so I gave her some tylenol. Then yesterday morning she said it hurt again and her back also hurt. So I thought something was going on more than just a headache and sure enough, she had a temp of 99. Just enough to make her feel really icky. She's yet to run a fever this morning and her head is better, but since she was so tired yesterday, I'm keeping her home from school today. Yesterday afternoon, she asked me to turn off the TV and the lights so she could take a nap!!!! Kaylee said that!!! My little, "I never need a nap" girl. So, I'm hoping she has a nice restful day today and she'll be back at school tomorrow.
