Wisdom From Wicked Tuna

I was watching Wicked Tuna while I was running on the treadmill this afternoon and it really got me thinking....
God is a genius!  How He knew to use fishermen as some of the earliest leaders of the christian church...amazing!  There are so many great parallels between fishing and sharing the gospel.

Matthew 4:18-19
18 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers--Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew--throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!"

This is what I was thinking about watching Wicked Tuna.  When they were trying to catch a really big fish, they couldn't reel it in super-fast and tug like crazy on the fishing pole. If they did, the line would break and the fish would be lost.  Instead they had to reel a little bit at a time and tug gently once in a while.  Little by little the fish would get closer and closer to the boat until, eventually, it was close enough for someone else to grab it and bring it all the way into the boat.

I think this is how we are supposed to share our faith with others - little by little...a story of what God has done for us here...a little nudge with an invitation to come to church with us there....little by little, bringing them closer and closer.  The final work being completed by the Holy Spirit...He will bring them the rest of the way into the boat.

The other point I connected was that there had to be some action on the fisherman's part, or the fish would have either gotten away or it could have been eaten by a larger predator, like a shark.  The same goes for us.  We can't just sit back and do nothing either.  We have to share our experiences and the great love we have received from the Lord with others.  If we don't they will drift away and may even be 'eaten by sharks.'

Romans 10: 13-14
13 For "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him?

I'm sure that there are many, many more parallels to be made.  But this is what I felt compelled to share.
